Choose a live vocal microphone
for a better live sound experience

When choosing a vocal microphone, it’s often not just the sound that matters, but also less obvious characteristics. What really counts is how well it performs under real-world live conditions.

In practice:

• Choose a microphone which doesn't have any exaggerated interaction with your voice with very specific notes. Give the mic a chance in more than one environment.
• Choose microphone which doesn't feed back easily.
• Pay considerably more money only for a microphone you can test in more than one environment, and that suits your voice with minimal correction, and that sounds considerably better than a Shure SM58 with an EQ correction.

Recommended items from the catalog:

• Shure SM58- The best compromise between end result, versatility, and feedback rejection. Full lows support thinner vocals well, yet need reduction for fuller vocals.
• AKG D5- A resolute, balanced sounding microphone with controlled lows, truthful midrange and shiny highs. If pushed too hard, a reduction at the 12-16kHz will be necessary to avoid feedback. Worth the risk, if you have a digital mixer.
• Audix OM2 / OM3- The winner of feedback rejection, these have a controlled low end, great resolution, yet a sound some might find sterile. Great for cutting rock, not for jazz.
• Sennheiser e835- A good performer, a bit more 3-dimentional than SM58, yet less focused and cutting through a dense mix. Full lows support thinner vocals well, yet need reduction for fuller vocals. Great for smooth jazzy female vocals.
• Se Electronics V7 and Audio Technica ATM41HE- very smooth yet detailed highs, controlled lows, and unless digitally corrected- a midrange slam suitable for vocals with less midrange.
