Choose the right PA system
for a better live sound experience
If you're looking for a clean, undistorted sound—especially in the high frequencies and vocals—the choice between a 2-way and a 3-way PA system can be crucial.
In practice:
• We hear sounds from 20Hz-20kHz. The average 2-Way design transitions the sound from the woofer to the tweeter at 1-2kHz, about the middle area of this spectrum. The higher the frequency, the less movement it requires from the membrane, hence less distortion. But a higher crossover frequency means the woofer will have to reproduce higher frequencies than before, where it lacks resolution and control over its own movement. Hence, the manufacturer chooses a compromise frequency to cross.
• The “EEEEEEEE” sound you ofter hear from vocals is the small tweeter at around 3-3.5kHz, efforting itself trying to reproduce vocals, or other instruments.
• A 3-Way design consists of a big woofer for the lows, a smaller woofer for the midrange, and a tweeter. The average 3-Way crosses from the mid-woofer to the tweeter at least at 4kHz. The mid-woofer does not effort itself at 3 kHz, and does not need to reproduce the lowest frequencies, often resulting in a smooth sounding system.
